MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

One of the Memphis Tigers has captured more than just a win after their matchup with Temple.

Genard Avery, a junior linebacker for the University of Memphis, was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's (TSWA) Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Avery helped the Tigers to their 34-27 victory over Temple last Thursday night. In the process, he racked up nine tackles, tying his career-high record.

Perhaps one of the most memorable moments for Avery came when the score was tied and the Tigers needed a big play, and Avery was their man.

With 1:17 remaining in the third quarter, Shareef White knocked a pass loose from Temple and Avery picked it off and took it 23 years for his second interception for a touchdown of the season.

Avery also had eight of his nine tackles unassisted during the game, one sack, and a quarterback hurry.

The Tigers' tackling leader is beginning to also create a lengthy resume' as he adds this week's defensive player of the week to his American Athletic Conference honor roll title for Thursday's performance as well.
