MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

City of Memphis shed some light on how the city will handle the recently-passed marijuana ordinance.

The ordinance gives officers the choice between arresting people who are in possession of half an ounce or less of marijuana or giving them a citation. The citation would require the offender to pay a $50 fine or do community service.

Prosecutors said they can only act after police make that decision.

“They could plead guilty and accept the $50 fine or request community service—or, they could also choose to have a trial with the judge,” chief prosecutor Teresa Jones said.

Memphis police director Mike Rallings said he wants everyone to know the ordinance has not gone into effect yet and that marijuana is still illegal.
