LAMBERT, MS (WMC) -

Lambert Fire Department, Mississippi State Fire Marshals, and ATF agents are investigating a fire at Faith Baptist Church in Lambert, Mississippi.

According to a church member, the church has caught fire before. Church members believe the fires may be the result of an arson.

Smoke continued to pour out of the remains of the church Thursday afternoon.

Around 3 a.m. Thursday, the preacher’s wife heard a popping noise and looked outside.

"It just looked like an inferno,” she said.

Hours later, Faith Baptist Church was gone. Now, nothing but a few chairs remain.

"It's sad that someone has that much hate,” church member James Hall said. “Honestly, I don't understand it or know what type of person would do something like this, especially [to] a church."

The fire started in a back room. That room's electricity had been disconnected previously.

Just three months ago, the preacher’s home, located next door, was also destroyed in a fire. No cause for that fire has been determined.

"If the horn hadn't gone off on the preacher’s wife's vehicle, they would have burned up,”

Church members are concerned for their safety, fearing the church was targeted by an arsonist.

"Our preacher and his wife are scared to stay in their house.”
