TIPTON COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

A scam artist is trying to swindle people out of their hard-earned money, according to Tipton County Sheriff's Office.

Tipton County deputies said they have received several complaints concerning a particular scam that has been going on for years.

In the scam, a victim receives a call from a local phone number.

The caller claims to be a police officer or deputy. He then tells the victim that they have missed a court date or jury duty and have a warrant out for their arrest. In order to get the warrant dismissed, the victim is asked to provide their banking account information or to purchase pre-paid Visa cards.

The caller often threatens to send law enforcement to the victim's home if they do not pay the money.

“These scam cases of theft and fraud exploit the citizens of Tipton County. The caller uses threats of being arrested to get the victim to quickly send them money.  If you receive a call similar to these, please do not provide any personal information or transfer any money. There is no manner to recover any of the money and the calls, even though they appear to be a local number, are being traced to overseas cellular phone numbers.  The Sheriff’s Office does not contact anyone by telephone to advise them there is an active warrant for their arrest or collect any money by telephone or in person.  Citizens can simply contact the Sheriff’s Office or Central Dispatch to verify if a caller is actually a law enforcement officer in Tipton County,” Sheriff J.T. “Pancho” Chumley said.

If you receive a suspicious call that could be part of this scam, please call the Criminal Investigations Division at 901-475-3300, Central Dispatch after hours at 901-475-4300, phone in tips at 901-475-3307, email tips to Sheriff@tiptonco.com or Facebook Sheriff J.T. Pancho Chumley.  Anonymous tips can be submitted to the Tipton County tip411 app or by texting “Tipton” to 847411.
