MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A man in behind bars after police said he pointed a gun and threatened to shoot another man at church Sunday.

On October 16, Memphis police said Artis Mitchell, 61, got into an argument at True Love Outreach Ministries in the 1200 block of Cummings Street.

According to the police report, the victim said he got into an argument with Mitchell in the parking lot of the church because Mitchell was making "lewd comments" about the man's mother.

Church members stepped in and broke up the argument and told Mitchell to go inside.

The victim said he went inside the church but went back outside a few minutes later.

"(Victim) advised the male (Mitchell) was standing next to a white truck armed with a silver handgun. (Victim) advised he and the male continued to yell and argue," according to the police affidavit.

A witness separated the two men again. But, according to police records, Mitchell continued making threats to shoot the victim. The witness also told police Mitchell pointed the gun at him and threatened to shoot him as he was trying to break up the argument.

The witness told police Mitchell "raised the gun up, pointing it at him as he was making threats to shoot and kill (victim)."

After Memphis police officers were able to arrest Mitchell and search him, they discovered eight live .45 caliber rounds in his pocket. They also found a Ruger P90 .45 caliber in his vehicle.

Mitchell admitted to officers he had the handgun during the fight, but denied he made threats to shoot or kill anyone.

Mitchell does have a handgun carry permit.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon.

He is in jail on a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court October 17.
