One of the most famous pairs of shoes in television history is in need of a rescue.

The Smithsonian Institute needs $300,000 to help save the shoes worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz.”

The shoes are looking like they've made the trek down the yellow brick road a few too many times. The red color is fading, sequins are becoming loose, and the soles are worn out.

A kickstarter campaign has already raised more than 10 percent of its goal. The donations will pay for conservation work and a climate-controlled case for the shoes at the National Museum of American History.

The campaign is being promoted by the Smithsonian on social media. Donations will be collected until mid-November.

Several pairs of ruby slippers were worn by Garland during filming. At least five authentic pairs are known to currently exist.
