RIPLEY, TN (WMC) -

A train hit and killed a 9-year-old girl who was playing outside her home in Ripley, Tennessee.

The crash happened Saturday around 5 p.m.

Family members said Kelly Payton was a sweet and gifted young girl. They said she was playing near her home and got too close to the railroad tracks in the area.

"She was a pretty little girl, very respectful," Payton's cousin Oscar Alexander said. "I just hate that it happened to her like that, you know."

Other family members described Payton as a gifted and timid girl who loved to laugh and play. They said she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up.

Canadian National Railway confirmed the crash happened on the tracks located near Highway 19 and College Street in Ripley. The company said the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.

District Attorney Mike Dunavant said Ripley Police Department, railroad police, and juvenile investigators are investigating the crash.
