SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

Shelby County commissioners will meet Wednesday to discuss a proposed marijuana decriminalization ordinance.

The ordinance will be very similar to the one that passed in Memphis earlier in October.

Under the new Shelby County ordinance, if someone is found with half an ounce of marijuana or less, they could face a fine of up to $50, with the option to serve some community service instead of jail time. The punishment is really up to the discretion of the investigating deputy.

This reading will be the first of several. Like its Memphis counterpart, it's facing some opposition.

Some of those opposed think the ordinance will send a mixed message to children and exacerbate the drug problem in the county.
