MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The U.S. has the highest number of guns per capita in the world at more than 112 per 100 people. Many of them travel with their firearms.

Jeff Wippel is one of those gun owners who travel with a gun. He said he takes special precautions before his gun gets to the airport.

"It has to be in a locked box," said Wippel.

But not everyone knows the best way to do it, according to Transportation Safety Administration representative Mark Howell.

"We've had some folks that have known you're not allowed to bring it to the checkpoint, but just put a firearm in their suitcase," said Howell.

Last year, more than 2,600 guns were discovered at airport checkpoints. It happened 28 times at Memphis International Airport.

To make sure you're not the next one, you need to follow these steps.

First, get a hard sided case with padding.

Second, unload the weapon.

Next, lock the box.

Finally, declare it to the airline.

"If you don't do one of those things right we're going to let you know about," said Howell.

You also could face a hefty fine or maybe not be allowed to fly that day. Jeff Wippel is not taking any chances this time. He's leaving his gun at home as he travels to England.
