Anticipation is mounting for the new Memphis Tigers basketball season.
Not necessarily because the fans believe they'll hang new banners at FedExForum, but because they want to see what the team will look like under new Head Coach Tubby Smith.
Smith hosted Tiger Hoops Media Day at the Finch Center on the Main Campus Tuesday.
Despite a depleted roster depth wise, with only 11 scholarship players, Smith says he's pleased with the level of talent he does have in-house, and expects nothing less than championship-level effort.
Though the team was picked fifth in pre-season in the SAC, Tigers players saw that as a number, not a prophecy.
"My personal, I have never been like, hold my hat on rankings, because I have always been an underdog," point guard Jeremiah Martin said. "It's better being an underdog and surprising everyone instead of being expected to do something and don't nothing happen."
"We went to the Championship last year, right? Y'all didn't think we were going to go. So, it ain't about what they think, it's about what we're capable of doing. because a lot of people be criticizing have never played basketball," forward K.J. Lawson said. "So, you know, going into the season we're just focused on game by game. And we'll let that determine what we're going to be in the long run."
The U of M surprised everyone with a run to the AAC Title Game last season.
The public's first look at the Tigers is coming up November 7 with an exhibition game against crosstown foe CUB at FedExForum.
