A man attacked a woman as she left her job at an event center in Shelby County, but the woman fought back.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office said the 49-year-old grandmother was working at Woodland Hills Event Center on Tuesday night. She was working part-time at the Cordova event center when she was attacked and nearly robbed as she left work around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

She said she heard footsteps behind her after she left work and as she was about to get into her car. Before she could escape, a man hit her over the head several times.

The man forded her to the ground and then told her, "Do what I tell you or I will shoot you."

Because she never saw a weapon, the woman said she started to fight back against her attacker. He punched and kicked her but eventually ran off.

The woman had minor cuts and injuries, but she did not go to the hospital for treatment.

"The crazy thing is that can happen anywhere," Tayler Johnson said. "I leave work here at Mr. P's at 11-11:30 all the time."

Johnson works near the area where the woman was attacked.

Now, those in the area said they are being extra cautious.

"Have my keys ready, have pepper spray, if you're of age have a license to carry," Johnson said.

The 49-year-old grandmother was also a housekeeper. She was working a second job at the event center to support her children and her grandchildren.

The suspect remains at large and no further description of him is available at this time.

The event center had no comment, but did say they are considering more security changes.
