An environmental group is warning parents about toxins that could be hiding in Halloween makeup.

A recent study by the Breast Cancer Fund found the makeup--marketed for kids--could contain heavy metals. The group sent the face paints to a laboratory to have them tested for heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury.

According to the report, 21 of 48 tested makeup palettes from across the country contained at least one toxic heavy metal. Some contained as many as four.

Nine of the palettes contained lead. Experts said even a small amount of digested lead could potentially have detrimental effects.

The study found that darker pigments tended to have a higher concentration of heavy metals, especially lead.

However, according to the Breast Cancer Fund, these dangerous elements are not listed on the ingredient labels for this makeup because it does not have to be tested.

Experts said your best bet is to use all-natural makeup, or avoid darker pigments.
