MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Two University of Memphis football players are tentatively off the team and are being investigated by Memphis Police Department.

Jae'Lon Oglesby and Kam Prewitt are sophomores on the Tiger football team, but this week they got into an argument and are now being investigated, according to Memphis Police Department.

The police report said Oglesby and Prewitt got into a fight on campus Tuesday.

That night, Oglesby heard shots being fired outside his apartment. When he went outside he saw several bullet holes in his car.

Oglesby said he never saw who fired the shots. He did, however, admit to getting involved in a fight with teammate Kam Prewitt.

"So you want to damage somebody's car, their vehicle that they paid for because of an argument?  That's horrible,” UofM student Tyler Burkley said.

Burkley said even more surprising than hearing the news is that she did not hear it from campus officials.

"I didn't know anything about it, and I'm on campus every single day,” Burkley said. “And I have to hear about it from a reporter."

"We usually get a text message, but that's usually with robberies and stuff,” student Louisa Ekem said.

Assistant Athletic Director Tom Bowen said the university and the athletic department are aware of the investigation and are fully cooperating with police.

"It looks like the football players need to check their character,” Burkley said.

Oglesby is a wide receiver on the team; Prewitt plays defensive back. Both players have been placed on indefinite suspension. Head coach Mike Norvell released the following statement on Wednesday:

“While the incident on Tuesday night is being investigated in conjunction with the University of Memphis’ Student Code of Conduct, and in consultation with Athletic Director Tom Bowen, I have placed Jae’Lon Oglesby and Kam Prewitt on indefinite suspension. I will make no further comments on this matter while it remains under investigation.”
