MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis police are searching for a man they said chased a woman down and tried to rape her.

The incident happened on Saturday, September 10, around 4:30 a.m.

Police said a woman was walking eastbound on Union Avenue near Danny Thomas Boulevard when a man followed her, drove ahead, and parked in a parking lot with his lights off to wait for her.

Police said the man then drove his SUV in front of her, so she crossed the street to avoid him.

Police said the man then got out of his SUV, ran across the street, and grabbed the woman, throwing her to the ground and dragging her.

The victim fought the man away and was able to escape.

The suspect is described as a black man in his late 30s or early 40s, standing 6’2 and weighing about 230 pounds. He was last seen in a silver SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee.

"It's not so surprising that it happens at like a time like that," Josh Boekesch said. "It's just, you know, someone who felt safe walking around here probably did it a whole lot of times, then all of a sudden someone is sneaking around. It's just unfortunate."

Boekesch was making his way to the Grizzlies' season opener. He was walking near the spot the woman said she was almost raped. However, it's a path Boekesch said he feels is safer to take during the day.

"More so during the day, I'll walk down here," he said. "If it's nighttime, I usually get a ride or drive myself."

Surveillance cameras caught the SUV on video, and a composite sketch was made of the man.

If you know where the suspect may be, call police.
