GERMANTOWN, TN (WMC) -

Former University of Memphis and Memphis Grizzlies basketball player Dalenta "DJ" Stephens is behind bars, accused of domestic assault.

According to the police report, Stephens and the mother of his child were arguing in front of a Germantown home on Monday. That's when he grabbed her and pushed her on the ground.

The victim said she got up, but Stephens grabbed her by the throat and threw her on the ground again. She got up again, and he grabbed her by the arm, throwing her to the ground again. She hit her head on the pavement.

She said Stephens then walked away.

The victim then called 911 and went to the hospital in stable condition. She told officers that Stephens assaulted her.

Stephens is charged with aggravated domestic assault.

Stephens was a crowd favorite at University of Memphis through his senior year in 2012. He then played professionally for several years before signing with the Memphis Grizzlies last year. He was waived, however, after five preseason games in 2016.

“I would go down to the FedExForum and watch him, and he seemed like such a good guy,” Blake Morgan said.

The arrest came as a shock to many Memphis hoops fans. At 92.9 ESPN Radio on Thursday, it was a hot topic.

“Everybody in the city loves DJ, and is showing the same shock and awe, and how could DJ do this of all people?” co-host John Martin said.

“I don't think there's a more stand up guy around,” co-host Jason Smith said. “If true, he's obviously made a horrible, horrible mistake that he's got to pay for."

Smith and Martin have been covering DJ’s journey for years. They never expected anything like this to happen.
