A mother stabbed her teen son with a pocket knife before dropping him off at school, according to Memphis Police Department.

Police said Toni Coleman, 40, got into an argument with her 16-year-old son while Coleman was driving her children to school. Once they reached the intersection of Riverdale Road and Quince Road, the teen said his mother pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed him in the leg.

The teen was sitting in the backseat behind his mother. According to police, Coleman pulled out a pocket knife, reached behind the seat with her right hand, and stabbed the teenager. Then, she dropped him off at school.

According to the police affidavit, Coleman said she was defending her daughter when the incident happened:

"Toni Coleman advised that she swiped at her son with the knife in defense of her daughter. She advised that her son has been assaulting his sister, her daughter, for a while. He is very aggressive and disrespectful. She said that he was acting out in the car and she was afraid that he would hurt her daughter or her," according to the affidavit.

Coleman told investigators she did not try to hurt the teenager, she only wanted to scare him.

After the boy was dropped off, a school official called emergency crews for help.

"That just goes to show the care that administration and teachers here have for their students,” MPD spokesman Louis Brownlee said.

The boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in non-critical condition.

Coleman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
