STARKVILLE, MS (WMC) -

It wasn’t pretty, but the Mississippi State Bulldogs got it done in Starkville on Saturday.

The Dawgs gave up a whopping 41 points to FCS foe Samford, but the MSU offense moved the ball at will and got the 56-41 win.

On offense, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald put up monster numbers. He completed 20 of his 35 passes for 417 yards and 5 touchdowns, but he did throw two interceptions and looked a bit shaky at times. On the ground, he led all players in rushing with 119 yards on 19 carries and tallied two rushing scores.

Junior wideout Donald Gray caught three of those touchdown passes on just four catches. Gray had a pair of 70+ yard touchdowns en route to a 207-yard day.

Fred Ross caught another 9 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

MSU racked up an incredible 669 yards of offense.

Defense, however, was a much different story. Samford gashed the Bulldogs D for 627 yards, 468 through the air.

While Samford entered the day 6-1 on the season, this has to be a complete disaster for the Bulldogs, who appear extremely unlikely to make a bowl as their final four games come against Texas A&M, Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss.

MSU improved to 3-5 on the season, but sit at the bottom of the SEC West standings.
