Severe drought plagues Mississippi

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The entire Mid-South is suffering from drought conditions right now, but Mississippi has been dealing with the worst of it. Several counties are under a severe drought in north Mississippi, including Lafayette, Quitman, and Panola.

There are still burn bans in place for all counties in Mississippi until further notice. The abnormally dry and warm conditions can cause fires to spread rapidly and any burning is highly discouraged. When a burn ban is in place, you can be fined up to $100 for burning on your property.

The drought conditions have worsened over the past two weeks across the southeast with many areas suffering the worst 60-day period on record. Below normal precipitation is forecasted for November.

It has been over two weeks since the Mid-South had measurable rain and we are expected to remain mostly dry for the next week.  There is a chance for scattered showers on Thursday, but there will not be enough measurable rain to pull us out of the drought.

Tennessee and Mississippi are suffering from moderate drought conditions. There are no burn bans in Tennessee at this time, but you should still use extreme caution when burning.
