A teacher is accused of injuring a child at an elementary school.

According to a police report, Alfred Lloyd assaulted a 10-year-old after a disturbance in a classroom at Belle Forest Community School.

The school principal told officers the child was picked up and thrown to the floor in the hallway, hitting his head on the tile floor. The child, who had a bump on his head and a scratch on his chin, is doing OK since the incident.

The teacher admitted that he was in a confrontation with the child, but he denied throwing him on the ground. Lloyd is charged with child abuse and neglect.

"A teacher abusing a child at the school, now that's really shocking," said grandparent Ruth Lindsay, who realized these are just allegations at this point. "But, I know that some kids are out of control."

Those who know Lloyd said he is not one to get into trouble.

"I've never known him to be in trouble period," Andrew Carter, Lloyd's neighbor, said.

Carter said someone who lives in Lloyd's home even has a day care at the location. That's why it is hard for him to believe his neighbor is guilty of the allegations.

"He's the type of person I would leave my son with. This is a real surprise," Carter said.

Shelby County Schools said Lloyd was an employee at the school. He has since been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. Memphis Police Department identified Lloyd as a teacher at the school.
