MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The NAACP is asking for a pause on charter school expansion until a task force ensures certain conditions are met nationally.

The NAACP held an informational session at First Baptist Church Broad on Tuesday to discuss what exactly they are asking and why.

"Calling for a reasonable pause on charter school expansion, not rash elimination," Gloria Sweet-Love, state conference president, said.

The NAACP wants a specially formed task force to make sure specific conditions are met nationwide.

"We want transparency and accountability," Sweet-Love said.

Despite many schools in the state already meeting those standards, she said there are some that are not.

"Do you have some that are not doing all that they need to do? Yes," she said. "Bringing it out to be an open conversation I think is what we need."

Sarah Carpenter, Executive Director at Memphis Lift, said parents want to be included in the conversation about what happens.

"We need to be at the table also," Carpenter said. "These are our children you're talking about."

Sweet-Love agrees and said all school systems should be held to the same standard.

"We are pro-public, not anti-charter," she said. "Give each of our nation's youngest citizens the best possible education regardless of race."

The bottom line: Both want the best education possible for children.
