WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC) -

A new FedEx aviation program will give Mid-South students a unique opportunity.

Arkansas State University received a major addition: a state-of-the-art FedEx Aviation Technology Center.

The new facility is located at ASU's Mid-South campus (located in West Memphis, Arkansas).

ASU Mid-South Chancellor Debra West said the new facility and the training program that comes along with it will give students a great chance to land a good job.

"This typo of training program--this program in particular--we know the jobs exist," West said.

The new facility cost $3.4 million to build. It took six years to complete.

With it open, students can now learn how to operate FedEx airplanes in an environment similar to what really exists at the FedEx hub in Memphis.

"More real world experience; more hands on experience; more opportunity," West said.

Students will be able to train directly with a retired FedEx Boeing 727.

Much of the money used to build the FedEx Aviation Technology Center was donated or secured through grants.

The school and the students say it's an investment that will pay off in the long run.
