A man is in critical condition after being shot in Orange Mound.

Memphis Police Department said the shooting happened in the 2700 block of Deadrick Avenue at approximately 5:36 p.m.

The man was taken to Regional Medical Center.

Those who live in Orange Mound said violence of this nature is not new.

"I'm just praying for Orange Mound to get better," Sharon Neil said.

Neil said it is unsettling to feel unsafe in the place where you live.

"You could be sitting on your porch and anything could happen," Neil said.

The area is one of the high crime areas in District 4 pointed out by city leaders on Tuesday. Just blocks from where this shooting took place, a new SkyCop camera could be installed.

"This program is designed to put them in the area of greatest need," City Councilman Phillip Spinosa said.

Leaders are looking at 21 hot spots as possible options for the new cameras. Spinosa said the plan is to continue to buy the cameras, so they can hit more areas of the city.

"To hopefully get some funding now to roll out another purchase of cameras," Spinosa said.

But in the meantime, residents like Neil said there are a few things people living in the area can do to help cut down on the violence.

"Everybody need to pray and get along," Neil said.
