ST. LOUIS, MO (WMC) -

Now that the minor league baseball season has ended, we’re continuing our look at how the St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospects (including Redbirds) performed in 2016.  Last time, we profiled the #6 prospect, CF Magneuris Sierra.

6.  Delvin Perez  SS
6’3”, 175 lbs.
Bats-Right, Throws-Right.

The Cardinals selected Perez in the first round of the 2016 major league draft.  He played for the International Baseball Academy in Ceiba, Puerto Rico.

This past season Perez played in the rookie Gulf Coast League.  In 43 games he had 163 at-bats, hitting for a .294 batting average, an OBP of .352, and a slugging percentage of .393.  He hit 8 doubles and 4 triples.  He struck out 28 times
and walked 12 times, and stole 12 bases while only being caught once.

Perez headlined a strong class of prospects from Puerto Rico in the 2016 draft, but news of a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs put a huge question mark next to the toolsy shortstop’s name.  The Cardinals rolled the dice with
the first of their three first-round picks, and signed him for the full pick value at #23 overall.

Perez has all the tools to stay at shortstop as he moves up through the organization.  He has good speed, instincts, range, and hands – as well as a plus arm.  His only flaw defensively is that, although he can often make flashy plays,
he does try to do too much on occasion.

Perez’s bat is behind his glove, but there are tools to work with.  His approach at the plate and his pitch recognition will need work as he advances.  Perez’s speed works well offensively, and he could grow into more power as he matures.

Premium infielders are always in high demand, which is why the Cardinals were willing to risk drafting Perez in the first round despite the positive drug test.  If that was only a one-time mistake, Perez could provide the Cardinals with
a first-round bargain.
