Record-breaking heat coming to an end

(WMC) -

After days of record breaking heat in the Mid-South, there is finally an end to the pattern, but not before a few more records fell.

Memphis, Tupelo, MS, and Jackson, TN all set record highs Thursday afternoon. The high in Memphis reached 85 degrees, topping the record of 83 set in 2012. Memphis was also just one degree shy of tying record highs for the November 1 and 2, while Tupelo and Jackson broke record highs for those dates.

The month of October also ended on a record note, with Memphis breaking the old record of 84 on that date in 1984 by setting a new record of 87 degrees, making for a very warm Halloween.

Temperatures for the entire month of October were well above normal limits, as the month ended with an average temperature 6.6 degrees above normal. But, it looks like we can now say goodbye to the extreme heat as a somewhat more seasonable pattern settles in for a while.

A cold front Thursday will allow cooler air to filter into the region as the week comes to a close. The air behind the front will be dry, so temperatures will likely warm to above average limits, reaching the low to mid seventies, but nowhere near the record heat of the past days.  Unfortunately, there will be little if any rain over the area in the coming days as our moderate to severe drought pattern continues.
