Don't put the mosquito spray away yet!

It’s been a relatively warm fall so far to say the least. We have only had a couple of brief cool spells but remained well above freezing. That is likely the reason those pesky mosquitoes are still around. In fact, I would put the sketer meter at an 8 or 9 on a scale of 1-10, especially for those of you in communities near the Mississippi River.

The little biting insects are still out in full force and aren’t likely to die out anytime soon. The cooler temperatures in the 40s this weekend may help some, but we really need a good hard freeze or two to eliminate them. Freezing temperatures are not in the forecast for the next 10 days and based on trends, it may be toward the end of the month before that happens. Our earliest freeze in Memphis happened on October 16,1952, and our latest freeze happened on December 11, 1994. The average freeze date is around November 12. I wouldn’t be surprised if we make a run at the later date this year. For now, keep the mosquito spray handy!
