Memphis Police Department is investigating a bank robbery in East Memphis.

The robbery happened at Cadence Bank in the 500 block of South Mendenhall Road.

MPD said a man in his mid-20s, wearing a dark shirt and khaki pants, walked into the store and said he had a weapon.

He took an unknown amount of cash and may have driven off in a newer model white Chevrolet Silverado.

Police later released this footage of the suspect:

William Hunt walked across the street to the bank when he saw a man walk in looking nervous.

"Guy was breathing real heavy,” Hunt said. “And he reached into the box to get a deposit slip. There wasn't but one, so I made the comment 'they need to put some more out here.’”

Hunt felt that something wasn’t right.

"Took a look at him. Guy had a baseball cap on, some sunglasses, full beard.”

Hunt went on with his deposit, and the bearded man went to the teller window next to him. As the man left, the teller screamed that he had robbed her.

"In a matter of three minutes, it was over,” Hunt said. "It was real shocking. I mean, it really was. I never thought that would happen over there."

Just as the robber was walking out the door, Tim Shaner was walking in. As soon as he saw a man in a hat and glasses with his head down running out the door with a bag of cash, he knew what was going on.

“Obviously, a little scared, upset,” Shaner said.

Shaner didn’t see a weapon though, and had the presence of mind to peek around the corner to see where the man went.

"He got in a car with another man and took off,” Shaner said. “It was a truck, white pickup truck."

Hunt is still shocked that this happened at a bank in this part of town, but said that is just Memphis.

"It was real shocking, man, the way crime is right now,” he said. “Crime's on the rise, and people are doing any and everything."
