STARKVILLE, MS (WMC) -

Mississippi State University named its new athletic director.

MSU Baseball Coach John Cohen will now head the department, which has been without an AD since Scott Stricklin left for Florida in September.

Cohen, 50, has been head baseball coach since 2009 and led the team to a College World Series runner up in 2013.

"I love Mississippi State University," Cohen said. "As a student, later as a coach, and now with this fantastic opportunity to lead MSU's athletics program, this was always where I wanted to be. I am profoundly grateful for the chance to lead the totality of MSU athletics as I have tried to lead MSU's baseball program in daily and dogged pursuit of championships at the highest level."

The school announced the hiring Friday. Last month, a rumor floated that Cohen had been hired, but the school firmly shot it down.

MSU has not made any comment on who may replace Cohen as head baseball coach.
