MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A large fight broke out near Mitchell High School on Friday afternoon, according to Memphis Police Department. Some people said the fight started on social media, and then got physical.

Memphis Police Department confirmed an officer used spray to break up a large crowd of adults and children who were fighting it out on Mitchell Road. The fight left clothes and hair weave in the street. At one point, witnesses estimated three dozen people were involved.

Witnesses said the fight started with a small group of girls and then escalated.

"Some females got into an altercation so the fight transpired," Miko Banks said.

Banks said his son got caught up in the brawl while trying to get home from school. His son ended up in police custody.

"My son was on the way walking toward the house," Banks said. "They called somebody else and a car pulled up and surrounded him, jumped out trying to fight him, and he was trying to protect himself."

Although some people said the fight started as a result of an argument on Facebook, others said the argument started at school between a group of girls.

Chopper 5 flew above the scene and saw dozens of police cars and people in the area.

MPD said several people have been taken into custody. It's unclear if they will be arrested and face charges.
