MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of WMC Action News 5.

Our school systems are often the object of rabid criticism, and I get it: there are things that definitely need improving when it comes to our schools. But that's one reason I take time to highlight excellent ideas being executed in our schools.

This week, I give kudos to Shelby County Schools.

Bruce Elementary is one of several SCS schools creating Academic Parent-Teachers teams to help parents and students with homework.

Recently, a night session was held for parents to learn the best ways to help their children with their homework.

While the parents went to class, the students got to hang out and do a little karaoke.

What a terrific idea!

If you know of excellent ideas being executed in schools in the Mid-South -- I want to hear from you. Email me at abettermidsouth@wmctv.com or post on my Facebook page, A Better Mid-South.

Helping parents help their children be better students always makes this A Better Mid-South.
