A Navy sailor was reunited with his children Friday after being away from them for more than a year.

"It's been about 15 months," First Class Petty Officer Larry Luellen said.

Luellen has traveled the globe. His service has taken him to Japan, Australia, California, South America, and Virginia. But, for him, there's no place like home with his four children.

"The things I've missed most are like, the milestones in their life, like football games and cheerleading practice, things like that, you know...spelling bees," Luellen said. "Just things you want to be there, being a father, you want to be there."

Friday he started his week long vacation by surprising his children at Belle Forest Elementary School.

"How excited they're going to be and I'm already excited," he said. "So, I just can't wait to see them, see what they want to do."

First, he went upstairs to surprise his three fifth graders: Larry the third, Jayla, and Kayla.

At first they were speechless and shy, then they started to open up.

His next stop was downstairs to see his first grader, Layla.

"I think about him everyday," Larry Luellen III said. "I'm going to have fun with him while he's here."

Little Larry plans to follow his father's footsteps right into the Navy.

"Be a Navy scientist," he said.

As for Luellen, it's a day he has waited for.

"I don't even have words for it. I'm just happy right now," Petty Officer Luellen said.
