STARKVILLE, MS (WMC) -

In the midst of what appeared to be a disastrous season, Mississippi State was able to turn things around and defeat Texas A&M on Saturday, 35-28, in Starkville.

The Bulldogs stormed on the Aggies early, with Nick Fitzgerald taking a keeper 74 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

Mississippi State would keep the momentum strong, stopping A&M on their first several drives and leaping out to a huge 28-7 lead.

A&M would make their comeback bid, however. The Aggies intercepted Fitzgerald in the red zone twice and kept the game within reach, dropping the deficit to just seven points on two occasions.

Mississippi State racked up just under 600 total yards on a whopping 29 first downs on the day, and their offense has been on a roll.

Fitzgerald played well despite the two interceptions, throwing for 209 yards and rushing for another 182. Aeris Williams chipped in his part on the ground as well, rushing for 140 yards and a touchdown.

A first half injury to QB Trevor Knight limited the Aggies, but A&M’s quarterback play actually improved after the injury, with backup Jake Hubenak completing 11 of his 22 passes for 222 yards and two picks.

A lake Hubenak interception to Mark McLaurin would seal it, however, as Mississippi State came away with the massive upset win.

The Bulldogs improved to 4-5 on the season and picked up their second conference win of the season. A bowl game is not out of the question, but they will need to win a pair of their three remaining games against Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss.
