MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Mid-Southerners put on their running shoes Saturday for the South Memphis 5K.

Organizers for the race, which benefits St. Andrew AME Church, said it’s more than just a run—it’s an effort to help South Memphians start thinking about their health.

The race stretched along South Parkway and Mississippi Boulevard.

A 2014 Gallup survey showed Memphis tips the scales with an obesity rate of nearly 32 percent. That’s one reason organizers put on the run, which they said is uncommon for South Memphis but can promote a healthy lifestyle.

"We're trying to let South Memphis know that we're involved in the community,” organizer Jackie Pegues said. “We want them to know that health and welfare is one of the major problems in this area. We want to be part of the solution."

In addition to the race, participants were also able to attend a health fair, complete with information on health screenings and a tae kwon do demonstration.
