A man was shot and killed in South Memphis late Saturday night.

The shooting happened in the 1900 block of South Lauderdale Street.

James Morton, 25, was gunned down at Quick Mart and later died at the hospital.

Investigators said Morton was involved in a fight with two other men prior to the shooting.

His father, James Gates, heard a different story.

"I heard he was robbed and ran over,” Gates said. “Shot seven times and ran over three times."

Morton’s parents said he was not perfect, but described him as a stand up guy who would give you the shirt off his back.

"My only son. He was no Saint; he was a stand up guy. I loved him,” Gates said.

After two shootings in the area, neighbors weren’t surprised.

"We didn't have this problem when there wasn't no store over there. Why are we having this problem now?" Larry Woods said.

"Whoever killed him, we want justice,” stepmother Caprice Gates said. “Our kids are killing our kids and ain't nobody doing nothing to stop it."

Morton’s father can only hope something is done to prevent future violence after the loss of his son.

"Until we come together in unity, ain't nothing going to change.  No matter what’s go on. When we come together as men in unity, then it will change."

Police have released surveillance photos of one of the men accused of killing Morton.

He is described as a black man standing 5’8 or 5’9 with a medium build, medium complexion and low cut hairstyle. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, dark jeans, and black shoes.
