MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis Tigers and new head coach Tubby Smith take the court for the first game of the season Monday night.

The Tigers are scrimmaging against Christian Brothers University at FedExForum.

CBU, a Division Two opponent, is expected to give Memphis a good challenge.

There's a big spotlight on Tubby Smith, who is one of only two coaches to ever lead five different schools to the NCAA Tournament. Monday night, fans get a chance to see what type of team Smith will be able to field in his first season as the Tigers' head coach.

Monday night's game will not count in the win column for the Tigers, but if they lose (as they did in 2014) it will work against them.

"We'll have enough issues trying to win the games that will count," Smith said. "You never want to lose any game. We lost to Texas A&M Commerce, I think, my second year at Texas Tech, but we were able to hold on to our job and did a good job there as well."

Josh Pastner's Tigers lost to CBU on November 12, 2014. That Memphis team and Josh Pastner never really recovered from the 74-70 overtime loss.

Still, Smith said preseason exhibition game losses usually don't predict how an entire basketball season will go.
