Tigers beat CBU in exhibition basketball 69-42

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The coming out party for Tubby Smith as head coach of the Memphis Tigers got off to a soft opening Monday night at FedExForum as Memphis hosted crosstown foe CBU in exhibition action.

Yes, it's THAT CBU...the one that beat the Tigers in 2014 and started Memphis on a downward spiral which eventually brought Tubby Time to the Bluff City.

The Tiger defense forced 18 turnovers. Markel Crawford, a former Melrose High School star, notched 11 points, 7 rebounds, and a steal.

Dedric Lawson was strong inside and on the perimeter. He finished the night with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Brother K.J. Lawson finished with 11 points.

Tigers win it big, with a final score of 69-42.

Guard Markel Crawford said the Tigers were focused.

"Chemistry, felt great like we been playing for years together. We've been working hard as a team in practice and the coaching staff is stressing family," Crawford said.

Head Coach Tubby Smith said the defense played well.

"We really covered up for each other, played team defense. I like the way we contested shots, especially in the first. half," Smith said.

The Tigers next open the regular season November 14th against Texas Rio Grand Valley at FedExForum.
