Colleague says Ford seat should remain empty until special election

State Senator Steve Cohen is urging the Shelby County Commission not to appoint an interim replacement for former Senator John Ford, who resigned Saturday. Ford is embroiled in an ethics scandal that includes a federal indictment accusing him of accepting bribes and threatening an undercover F-B-I operative. Cohen commented over the weekend on the lawn of his house. He said with the legislative session concluded for the year, it makes more sense to wait for a special election and let the voters fill the seat Ford occupied. He said an interim appointment would just give someone a title and a chance to spend some taxpayer money on self-promotion.
