Free credit report

Everybody likes the word free, and starting today, a new federal law means every Mid-Southerner can get a free credit report. It's called the "Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003" and it means consumers have the right to request one free credit report from each of the three national credit reporting firms every 12 months. That's how often credit experts recommend you get a copy of your report to check its accuracy and to make sure no one has stolen your identity. The three national firms you can chose from are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. If you find something inaccurate on your report, the first step is to send a letter to the firm. Under federal law, they have 30 days to investigate and respond to the alleged inaccuracy and issue a corrected report. For more information you can visit
