Not your average January in the the Mid-South

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - January is typically the coldest month of the year for much of the nation, but that certainly hasn't been the case here in the Mid-South. According to data from the National Weather Service, the average temperature in Memphis for the the month of January is 48.9 degrees.

That is 4.26 degrees above average for the first 23 days of the month. The average high temperature for the month is 49.74 degrees, and we've only been close to that number twice on January 9th and 13 with a high of 50 degrees.

The average high temperature for the month from January 1 to 25 is 56 degrees. The average low temperature for January is 32.6 degrees, but the closest we've been to that number was 31 degrees on the 4th. The temperature has been above average for 18 days from the 1st to the 25th. The average low temperature for the month so far is 41.8 degrees. The warmest temperature for the month was 76 degrees on January 12, and the coldest was 13 degrees, which we hit twice on January 7th and 8th.

So far this has certainly not been an average January in the Mid-South, and long range data shows temperatures have been on the rise since 1970.
