A DeSoto County deputy shot in the line of duty is doing well, according to DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco.

Rasco said K-9 Deputy Brandon "Lee" Hutchens is still in the ICU, but he is “doing great” and is waiting for a step down room to open up.

Hutchens and Patrol Sergeant Hunter Garrett were part of a group of officers chasing a robbery suspect. Garrett and Hutchens were both shot in a shootout with the suspect, Kevin Darnell Washington. Washington was killed in the shootout.

Garrett was shot in the foot and released a few hours after he was admitted to the hospital. Hutchens was shot in the side of the chest and underwent surgery.
