CHARLOTTE, NC (WCNC) -

A teacher in North Carolina found a unique way to relate to his students and the video to prove it is inspiring people all across the globe.

The video has been viewed more than 21 million times in just one day.

Barry White Jr. takes attendance for his fifth grade reading class with handshakes. The thing is, each student has their own, personalized one. That's 40 different handshakes.

"(It) just started with me wanting to bring joy to students," White told NBC News. "Then now, it's blown up. "

White said muscle memory from doing them so often is what helps him remember each one.

He said he got the idea from watching Lebron James' pre-game handshake rituals with his teammates.

"I felt so inspired," student Denise Hart said. "I feel like I'm welcomed in his class.

White said the message is about more than just a handshake, and goes a long way in impacting students.

The students at the school are mostly lower-income, according to White.

"They come from situations that may not be ideal," he said. "Negative stigma placed on education itself. I'm very happy I can take away that stigma, and make school enjoyable ... Never underrate the value of relationships with anyone, either students or adult. To be positive and have positive relationships is extremely important."
