MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital dedicated its research tower to Dr. Donald Pinkel on Friday.
Dr. Pinkel was the first director and CEO of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital from 1962 to 1973.
During his tenure with St. Jude, Dr. Pinkel oversaw the Total Therapy strategy, which works to cure the common form of pediatric cancer called acute lymphoblastic leukemima. Children who come to St. Jude with acute lymphoblastic leukemima have a 100 percent survival rate.
The Pinkel Tower will be the first building on the St. Jude campus to be named for a St. Jude physician or scientist.
While Dr. Pinkel himself will be attending the dedication via live video, members of his family and other prestigious St. Jude staff will be in attendance.
WMC Action News 5's Justin Jaggers will be covering this event and have highlights at 6 p.m.
