According to a source close to the football program, some players were voicing their displeasure about teammates in social media. The April 10 fight started when said players were confronted. It began in the cafeteria, campus security pushed them out, the fight continued outside.
The incident was spread on social media. All of those arrested have bonded out of jail.
The spring football game is this coming Saturday and there is still no word if these student-athletes will remain on the team or face suspensions.
Trevor Ringo/Works Near Alcorn State University: "I think it will affect the football team, because they are #1 and those players are needed," said Trevor Ringo, who works near the University.
Kennedy Hill works with Ringo. "I feel like they should sit out a couple of games, but not the whole season,' said Hill.
Students at the University feel the fight does not represent the school as a whole.
"We represent so much more than what that fight was, and at the end of the day we're a family, things happen," said Gabrielle Hall, a student at Alcorn State.
Jami Eubanks, a History major at Alcorn State University had a similar message: "It doesn't affect the school, and it doesn't affect who we are, because, you know, we have leadership and character and sometimes we all fall short. They're young kids, they're growing up, but they'll learn."
Alcorn State has cooperated with law enforcement on the case. They released the following statement:
"Alcorn State University is aware of an incident involving students Monday, April 10. Maintaining a safe and secure campus community is the institution’s top priority. Campus police investigates all instances of student misconduct thoroughly and appropriate disciplinary actions are implemented in accordance with Alcorn’s Student Code of Conduct."
