MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Central High School teacher is on administrative leave after being arrested over the weekend.
"I'm very shocked. He's a very cool person. Actually he's a good teacher," student Keithland Saulsberry said. "I wouldn't think he would do something like that."
Students at Central High said Anthony Young teaches 9th grade English at the school, and is a very popular teacher. They also said he coaches boys soccer.
Parents said Young was not at the game Monday against Overton.
"He seems all cool because when he's around the soccer players, they all be cool with him and he wouldn't seem like he would hit his girlfriend like that. You shouldn't hit females," student Williams Jones said.
According to the police affidavit, Young is charged with domestic assault. The affidavit said around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Young got into a fight with a woman described as his girlfriend and hit her in the face several times with his fist. Police said the woman had swelling and abrasions near her left eye.
Police arrested Young outside his home where the fight happened.
"It's bad for the coach, but I don't know," one grandparent said, who wasn't sure how to respond to the news.
SCS confirmed the employee worked at Central High School. The district would not release details about the arrest or the employee's position at the school.
