MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The 2017 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest has finally arrived!
The tasty Memphis in May event kicked off Wednesday with the Big Hog Run at 4 p.m. WMC Action News 5 Meteorologist Brittney Bryant was the mistress of ceremony for the race.
In the race, chefs and judges ran from Orpheum Theatre to Beale Street and Riverside Drive. During the run, participants had to fill up on beer and bacon.
The winner of the race isn't the one who finishes first. Winners are determined by a combination of race time, body mass index, and age. First place takes home $1,000.
"This is the best run in the Mid-South," Tom Gettlefinger said. "This may be the best run in the United States."
The cooking part of the festival gets underway Thursday.
