MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The first day of school went smoothly for most families, but some parents found themselves waiting in a long line at Shelby County Schools headquarters.
Several parents said they registered their children for school, but when it came time for classes to start, the schools didn't have any record of the children in the system.
"Ready, dressed, backpack full of supplies, and everything, but they were saying, 'He's not in the system,'" Bryant Alexander said.
"I think this is ridiculous," Raven Wilburn said. "You have all these parents outside--our children should be at school. We shouldn't be outside in this line, in this heat."
Shelby County Schools said parents got locked out of the system when they tried unsuccessfully too many times to log into the online system.
SCS said it is committed to getting students enrolled as quickly as possible.
"We really would have liked it if they could've registered much earlier, because day one is important for our students to come in and be ready to learn," Kristin Tallent with SCS said.
"We don't have an access code to register her," Wilburn said. "We've been calling them [SCS]. We've been down here once already on Thursday."
