A major vote expected today regarding your child's education

Shelby County Commissioners must make a big decision today, regarding your child's education. Last time the county put the decision on hold. But now, parents are pushing to get it passed. Shelby County needs $50 million dollars to build a new high school. State law says the city is supposed to get three dollars for every one dollar the county gets. But the city waived that money. The current proposal gives both the county and city $50 million dollars. Those who oppose the proposal, like Commissioner Walter Bailey, say it short-changes city schools that have maintenance needs. "I thought we would be able to get a better deal for the city school system", said Bailey. That's why we delayed it. As it turns out everybody has assumed his original posture and now we're back to square one." In addition to the initial $100 million dollars, city and county schools plan to split $60 million dollars a year through 2009. That money will follow state guidelines. Bailey says the commissioners had an unofficial vote, so he knows how it'll turn out. He says the proposal will pass minus his vote. We'll find out tonight on Action News Five.
