"Tolling of the Bell" to save TennCare

TennCare enrollees and their supporters gathered in Nashville Thursday in an effort to draw attention to what some are calling a medical massacre.  On Monday, massive changes will take place in the TennCare system, with over 700,000 people effected:

-97,000 people will lose prescription drug coverage
-400,000 additional people will see their coverage limited
-290,000 could be cut from the program altogether

When volunteers from Shelby County join the bell tolling, Memphian Vivus Dorwin will be among them.

"We need to stand up. Every voice needs to be heard," he said.  Dorwin works with an agency that provides counseling and assistance to 15-hundred HIV and AIDS patients getting TennCare assistance in the Memphis area.

"They're scared to death facing the possibility of losing their medications, mutations of the HIV virus, less options for health care, and ultimately more sickness and death."

Dorwin - like many other protesters, hopes recent sit-ins at the capital can prevent what he believes will become a medical catastrophe: if thousands of patients can't get prescriptions, and other kinds of help from TennCare.

"Its reality, without meds people hiv aids will become sick and they will die," he said.

Dorwin hopes the demonstrations will ring loud and long enough to convince Governor Bredesen to find alternatives to cutting enrollees.

"It will drive up our insurance costs. People with private insurance will be paying more insurance. Companies will be paying more. It's a domino effect.

A domino effect that Dorwin hopes to dramatize through bells and other protests.
