OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head football coach Ed Orgeron welcomed
102 players here Thursday afternoon as returning players, members of the
2005 signing class, and new walk-ons reported to campus.
"Everybody that we expected to report is here," Orgeron said. "We had two players who had travel problems, but they should be here very soon."
Three Ole Miss signees - defensive lineman Jerrell Powe, offensive lineman John Jerry, and running back Marshay Green - did not report. Powe and Jerry, who did not meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements, will be reporting to Hargrave (Va.) Academy, while Green has yet to be certified eligible.
Players spent Thursday afternoon taking physicals while also attending meetings dealing with compliance education and academics. Those activities will continue on Friday.
Practice will begin on Saturday with the varsity working in the morning and the freshmen in the afternoon.
"We need to hit the ground running and pick up where we left off in the spring," Orgeron said. "Being able to split our practices should be really helpful to the freshmen. We did it this way at USC and had positive results with them getting more reps during the evaluation period."
Ole Miss will begin the 2005 season on Monday afternoon, September 5, against the University of Memphis Tigers. Kickoff is set for 3:30 in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis and the game will be shown nationally by ESPN.
