The Tennessee State Amateur Golf Championship has been played for 90-years. In no year has there been a finish like the one today. Tim Jackson's birdie on 18 capped a thrilling comeback. Down 5 strokes with 4 holes to play, the Memphian birdied the last 5 holes in a row.
" I knew I needed to birdie 17 and 18 to have a chance," he said after.
But it wasn't over quite. 2 other players could still send it to sudden death. Bryce Ledford needed to get up and down from the thick rough for par. A good chip got him close, but he couldn't get the putt to fall and he bogeyed the hole. Jackson's Danny Green, who started the final round with a one stroke lead, needed to make a 30 footer to tie for the lead, but it rolled past and Tim Jackson won his 4th Tennessee State Amateur Title.
"It's really emotional, to win this at my age."
The 46 year old Jackson had to fight off young whipper snappers like college junior Ledford, who was inconsolable after bogeying the last hole to lose.
"My confidence is shattered, losing like that down the stretch, but Tim deserved to win, birding the last 5 holes."< P >
