1 killed in shooting at steel company

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Memphis Police Department is searching for two suspects after a fatal shooting near a steel supply company in Uptown Memphis.

It happened late Monday night on North Dunlap near Lane at Southern Steel Supply.

One male victim was shot, and later died from his injuries.

Police said the two men left scene in a black Ford Escape.

"It's kind of scary," said Tammy Williams. "You know you never know what's going to happen. Just got to be careful."

Williams lives next door to Southern Steel and Supply on Dunlap just north of the Medical District.

It is where an employee was shot as he stood at the entrance to the building Monday night around 10:15 p.m. The man later died at the Regional Medical Center.

We attempted to talk with someone at the business about the shooting.

The man we were told to talk with said he did not want to speak on camera. He said employees are torn up over the shooting and gave their condolences to the family. He also said the company is cooperating with police.

In what appears to be a coincidence, Tuesday afternoon an ambulance and fire truck showed up and an employee was loaded into the ambulance. Fire investigators said it was a medical call.

Neighbors said they have never noticed any problems at the business that provides beams, tubes and other steel products.

But one woman, who did not want to give her name, said she saw something she considered strange at the business Sunday afternoon.

"This Sunday me and my daughter was walking and there was a guy that worked there, a white guy. He had a gun," she said.

She said it appeared to be a 9-millimeter handgun.

"To think about it to now someone is dead right next door," she said. "That's spooky to see the guy with the gun the day before it happened. It's kind of crazy."
